This village with no roads appears to be straight out of a fairy tale.

There is a town in the Netherlands that is fit for a fairy tale. There are no roads and only canals at this location. It is one of the most beautiful spots in the planet, and you may journey there by boat or on foot.

Giethorn is an idyllic village in Overijssel, located in the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, with numerous thatched-roof farms built on miniature islands connected by more than 160 bridges.

Giethoorn, a typical Dutch village in Overijssel, demonstrates how the Dutch coexist well with the water. This village is surrounded by lakes, reed beds, and woodland areas, with many thatched-roof farms and traditional wooden bridges.

Giethoorn arose from a peat diggers’ village (organic material, dark and rich brown carbon). People erected houses on the islands generated by peat extraction in this area, which resulted in lakes and ponds. There are no streets, no automobiles, and the only way to move from one area to another is by boat; it’s been dubbed the “Venice of the Netherlands” for this reason.

Is there anything else you can do?

Zuiderzee settlements like Vollenhove and Blokzijl are not distant from Giethoorn. You’ll walk past historic buildings, cathedrals, and castles that date back centuries. The De Weerribben-Wieden National Park is a must-see for nature lovers.

What is the best way to get there?

Giethoorn, in the province of Overijssel, is about an hour and a half drive from Amsterdam or Schiphol Airport.

Some folks come here on their bicycles and then go for a short walk through the town. Thatched-roof farms and attractively designed gardens line the town’s waterway. You’ll see a lot of hydrangeas if you like them! The majority of the farms can only be reached by boat or by crossing one of the numerous little wooden bridges.
