By Ryan Eicher 10 Mind-Blowing Glass-Blown Snakes

By blowing glass, Ryan Eicher, a Maryland-based artist, creates colorful and mesmerizing snakes. For the past 15 years, the artist has been blowing glass and making snakes.

DeMilked contacted him and inquired about the source of his inspiration for these serpents. “I love lampworking,” the artist said, “the process of melting and stretching glass with a torch is very stimulating.” Hot glass appeals to me because of its organic shapes and whimsical nature. When I was 18, I saw a man blowing glass at a music festival, and it piqued my interest. A friend and I set up a small-studio in their backyard and began studying techniques by watching YouTube videos and reading forums. I didn’t start taking classes until recently. I believe I could have developed my skills more quickly if I had started taking classes sooner, but I also had to be very creative with what I had, which I believe helped me grow as a designer.”

“I’ve always liked snakes,” he said when we asked why he chooses to make snakes. “Even as a toddler, if my-family went somewhere with a pond, I’d circle around the edge and try to catch all the critters-basking in the sun.” Snakes, in particular, I believe, get a bad rap; many people have legitimate fears of them, but they are generally-harmless. I like how the image of a snake-evokes strong emotions in people, whether fear or love, and I know I’ve done my job well when people react positively to my work.” In the gallery down, you can see some of his stunning work.
