Have you ever wondered how your neighborhood looked 30 or 50 years ago? If that’s the case, the re.photos website, which was recently launched by a group of people interested in then-and-now photography, has a database full of images that might be of assistance.
Anyone who enjoys before and after photos can contribute their photos to this database and compare how a street, an area, or a famous landmark appears now versus how it appeared in the past.

#10 Engabreen Glacier, Norway, 1889 – 2010
Axel Lindahl’s 1889 photograph of Engabreen depicts the glacier’s foot, where there was nothing but ice, glacial gravel, water, and bare mountain sides in a cold and hostile landscape. The valley is now far more fertile than it was more than 120 years ago. While the glacier arm has retreated far up the mountainside, birch forest, shore meadows, willow thickets, and marshland have established themselves.

#23 The Eiffel Tower, Paris, France, 1900 – 2017
The Seine bank at the 1900 World’s Fair.
One of the main attractions, next to the Eiffel Tower, was the “Globe Céleste.” It was a 45-meter-diameter heavenly globe in which visitors could sit in a chair and watch panoramic views of the solar system pass by. The ball was carried by four pillars, between which visitors could ascend via stairwells and elevators.
Visitors were simulated to be on the deck of a ship with a panorama of the large Mediterranean ports in the “Marerama,” the building with the four corner towers to the left.
Navigation, trade, and navigation were the focus of the exhibition pavilions on the left side of the shore.

#30 The Grinnell Glacier, Montana, USA, 1911 – 2008
Grinnell Glacier is seen in the foreground of the 1911 photograph, poised at the top of the waterfalls, and joined with Salamander Glacier in the background. In 1887, Grinnell estimated the ice wall to be 1,000 feet high. That wall of ice has vanished as of 2008, and Grinnell Glacier is no longer visible in the current photograph. Instead, it’s hidden behind the buff-colored ridge above the falls. Salamander Glacier is located below the ridgeline on the Garden Wall. This glacier is rapidly thinning in the middle and will most likely split in two within a few years. Gem Glacier, a small, rounded glacier to the upper left, had not shown signs of retreat until recently. It, too, is shrinking in size.

#39 Rue De La Paix, Paris, France, 1871 – 2016
In the rue de la Paix (confluence Place Vendôme) in 1871, the revolutionary Paris Commune erected a barricade.
It comes in the spring of 1871 for a workers’ and National Guard soldiers’ uprising in Paris against the conservative government. A Paris city council (commune) is formed through spontaneous elections, and its members (communards) attempt to force the transformation of France into a socialist union of sovereign communities against the central government’s will. The communards finally take control of Paris after bloody clashes.
